Dick Roach - Class of 1958 Dick was a defensive assistant with the Buffalo Bills which included four Super Bowl appearances and the number one ranked defense in 1988. He also coached in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, San Diego Chargers, Tampa Bay... Buccaneers, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots. He also coached with the Michigan Panthers in the USFL and the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL. He also coached in the college ranks at Washington State, Fresno State, Wyoming, Oregon State and Montana State.View more Jun 15, 2012
With the exception of the Chargers and Seahawks, all of that is set forth above. I just reviewed the Chargers list of all-time assistant coaches and Dick Roach's name does not appear there. Can you explain why?

Thank you for your input. I have made some additions and changes to Dick's page. I have several comments.
With respect to Mr. Roach's birthplace the information I had from various NFL Record and Fact Books is that his birthplace... was Rapid City. However, I did check the CFLapedia website. They list Faribault as the birthplace, so I have made that change. I also changed the birth year to reflect what I found on CFLapedia, which is consistent with the years in which he attended college.
I have added San Diego and Seattle to his coaching history. With respect to the Chargers, I would again point out that he does not appear on their list of all-time assistant coaches. That being said, the Chargers simply could have overlooked him when they published their media guide.
I can find nothing that lists Dick as being an assistant coach with Hamilton. CFLapedia only shows him as an assistant with Montreal. Hamilton's media guide does not have a list of all-time assistant coaches. I do know from past experience that CFLapedia sometimes misses things.View more Jun 17, 2012
Maddog48, Just want to thank you for your updates. I am Dicks son, so I was there during most, if not all, the many moves our family made. His younger brother, Mike, coached in the CFL and the NCAA and his older brother, Paul, coached NCAA and NFL. Paul was... at the Raiders when my day was at Fresno state so we got to go to all the Raiders home games. I got to meet all the players but Kenny Stabler was quite the person to meet. Him and Skip Thomas, they were a lot of fun and a hoot. View more Jun 17, 2012
The Chargers media guide was published before my Dad took the job. What is funny is that my Dad and Mike Rileys father coached together at Oregon State. Funnier still is Mike Riley was my flag football coach when I was in 4th grade while in school in... Corvallis. On another note, when my Dad was at WSU in Pullman Jack Elway and Mike Price were 3 and 2 homes away in the neighborhood. I played a lot of basketball with John Elway and had a huge crush on his sister Jana. (RIP) When with Montreal the team had a scout Bill Polian, who was instrumental in getting myself and my brother into prep School at the Hun School of Princeton. View more Jun 17, 2012
Just one more thing, Dick was also the Defensive Coordinator for many of the positions in his coaching career.

I appreciate your comments. There are a couple of additional comments. With respect to the Chargers media guide, I was referring to the 2010 guide which lists all the assistant coaches through 2009.
The other point is that before... the mid-1980s I do not know what specific position(s) he coached. I can only go by what I find on the internet or what I have in my collection of sports publications. Perhaps you can supply that information. You might also be able to supply his height, playing weight, and high school. You could also add some things in the personal notes I suspect.View more Jun 17, 2012
